The Goldfinch –Donna Tartt: A Detailed Summary And Analysis Of The Novel!The Goldfinch is a life drama fiction novel written by an American writer Donna Tartt. Donna Tart was born on December 23rd 1963 in Greenwood, Mississippi and she is a writer of some other novels such as The Secret History and The Little Friend. Tartt received Pulitzer’s Prize for Fiction in 2014 for her novel The Goldfinch. She has been active writer since 1992. Her previous novels (The Little Friend and The Secret History) have been translated to thirty languages. The novel itself revolves around the young boy named Theodore (Theo) Decker and the painting named ‘The Goldfinch’. One day, Theo accompanies his mother to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There, he sees a strange and striking red-headed girl. While he is thinking about the girl, terrorists attack the Museum, his mother dies, he is somehow able to survive the attack, and he thus he steals ( although ‘’accidentally’’ ) one of the paintings named- the Goldfinch, and after that, he flees the building. After these events Theo lives a dangerous and often very risky life- he becomes friend with the criminals, he sells counterfeit antiques, he gets engaged with the girl he does not love and finally- he even kills a man. The story itself begins in the first perspective, as its main protagonist (Theo himself) tells the readers the story of his life. From the first part of the story, we can see Tartt’s fine ability to retrospect the story as she draws the reader to the story from the moment he begins to read the novel. The Goldfinch is seven hundreds and seventy one page long novel, but once you start reading it and once you become captivated by the story and its complex characters the novel will seem a lot shorter. Some of the parts will maybe seem a bit boring and unnecessary too prolonged, but for the most of it, the novel will offer to you an exciting adventure worth of reading. Similar to her previous work The Secret History, The Goldfinch also revolves around one crucial event of the novel accompanied by some bad decisions that the characters made at the beginning or during the course of the novel.
